Roadtrip Africa started with a simple question: why isn’t it easier to explore Africa independently?
Back in 2011, founders Okke and Laura were living in Kampala. Friends and family would often fly over to visit. They all had the same wish: to explore Uganda freely, at a good rate, without joining a group tour.
But that option didn’t really exist. No company offered reliable 4×4 cars for self-driving with camp gear and route planning assistance.
So, an idea was born. An idea to create a company that would help travellers discover the magic of Africa on their own terms. We’ve come a long way since then, expanding our services to Tanzania, Kenya, and Madagascar, and opening local offices in Kampala, Arusha, Nairobi, and Ivato.
We’ve come a long way since those early days in Uganda. While we remain the proud market leader in the African self-drive industry with an ever-growing fleet of reliable 4x4s, our services have evolved. Today, we expertly organize complete, tailor-made tours.
Whether you want to take the wheel yourself or relax while one of our fantastic local drivers takes you to the continent’s hidden gems, we have you covered. Our driver-guides are the true heartbeat of our organized tours. They are passionate local specialists who ensure your journey is safe, insightful, and memorable.
Recently, Roadtrip Africa took an exciting step forward by joining the Travelbase family. This brings the added security and robust support of a leading travel organization, while allowing us to keep our core identity exactly the same. We keep things personal and direct when you contact us, you deal directly with our dedicated team in the Netherlands and Belgium, not a distant call center.
We believe this unique combination: European reliability, the backing of Travelbase, and our local teams’ on-the-ground expertise and contagious joy for life is what truly sets us apart.
Our local specialists manage our fleet and operations, knowing their home countries inside and out to ensure your trip runs flawlessly. A crucial part of this on-the-ground team is our phenomenal crew of local driver-guides. The cars are owned and maintained by our local colleagues and driven by passionate storytellers and guides. At the heart of every great African adventure is true local knowledge, which is why we are so proud of our dedicated teams on the ground in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and Madagascar.
