We choose a driver guide for the west and unless you are a very confident offroad driver i can only recommend to do the same. The “roads” are very challenging. Our driver Toky spoke excellent English and organized our daily experience in his country. As we spent most time in the west with its known security issue, we could not use the rooftop tent as much as we would have liked to. However, we spent some nice nights in the mountains and at the beach with the tent.

The roads
The road from Antananarivo to Miandrivazo is paved and relatively easy to drive, but don’t expect perfect conditions. The maintenance is poor, so there will be some washed-out sections and plenty of potholes. The route from Morondava to Bekopaka is a dirt track. That’s why exploring the Tsingy and the Avenue of the Baobabs is only permitted with our Class A vehicles.

Travel time
For this Baobab one-way tour, we recommend a 14 to 16-day itinerary with 9 days of car rental. Do note: this route involves long driving hours most days.
Beach daysWhen renting with Roadtrip Africa, you can return your car in Morondava before taking a domestic flight back to Ivato. If you like to wind down before heading home, spend a few relaxing days at Belo sur Mer, a laid-back beach spot. Want a longer beach holiday? Then head to Nosy Be, the perfect island escape after your two-week adventure. Just keep in mind: there are no direct flights from Morondava to Nosy Be. The West Coast of Madagascar and the Tsingy de Bemaraha are usually accessible from May up to mid-November, depending on the start/end of the rainy season.
Peak season runs from July to October, when our cars and popular hotels are booked months in advance. We recommend booking on time, to avoid disappointment.
