The Tanzanian coastline here is authentic and surprisingly untouched by tourism — a stark contrast to nearby Zanzibar. Only a handful of small-scale lodges and expats are based along this stretch, making it feel peaceful and genuine.

Pangani is a tranquil Swahili coastal town with historic architecture and a rich past as a trading port. Just north, Ushongo boasts some of the area’s best beaches, perfect for relaxing and watching fishermen bring in their catch.

• Maziwe Marine Park Island – Take a boat trip to this idyllic sandbar, approximately 10 km off the coast. Great for snorkelling, swimming, and dolphin sightings.

• Sunset cruise on the Pangani River – Spot crocodiles, hippos, and birdlife among the coconut groves while drifting past village life.

• Walking tour of Pangani – A guided walk reveals the town’s history, from Swahili trade days to its colonial-era buildings.

• Mike’s Beach Restaurant & Bar (Ushongo) – Popular with both locals and lodge guests. Fresh seafood, international dishes, wood-fired pizzas, cocktails, and tables right on the beach.

• Capricorn Beach Cottages (Pangani) – Enjoy some of the area’s best pizza under baobab trees with ocean views. Friendly owners and attentive staff add to the charm.

Important

• Do not take the coastal road through Saadani National Park.

  • Google Maps may suggest it, but road conditions are very poor.

  • Travel time will be longer than the main inland route.

Route

• Ushongo → Pangani: Drive north, cross the Pangani River by ferry, and continue north.
• Pangani → Pongwe: Follow the minor road (50 km) through coconut plantations.
• Pongwe → Msata: Join the A14 at Pongwe and follow it to Msata.
• Msata → Bagamoyo: Continue south towards Bagamoyo.

Tip

• Bring a packed lunch — there are only a few recommended stops along this route.

• To Fish Eagle Point: 3.5 hrs

Route

• From Ushongo, cross the Pangani River by ferry to Pangani.
• From Pangani, head north on the gravel road through Boza → Kilale → Tanga.

On the way

• Endless coconut plantations along the coast.
• The Pangani ferry crossing – part of the adventure!

Route

• From Ushongo, cross the Pangani River by ferry to Pangani.
• Pangani → Pongwe: Follow the minor coastal road (50 km) through coconut plantations.
• Pongwe → Segera: Join the A14 inland to Segera.
• Segera → Mombo: Continue on the B1 all the way to Mombo.
• Mombo → Lushoto: Drive through Mombo and turn right at the Usambara Filling Station. From here, the road climbs steadily into the Usambara Mountains until you reach Lushoto.

On the way

• Experience the shift from tropical coast to cool highlands — palm trees give way to alpine-style villages.
