Nanyuki is the gateway to Ol Pejeta Conservancy and Mount Kenya. This lively town has well-stocked supermarkets, good restaurants and comfortable hotels, making it a convenient place to stock up and take a break before continuing your journey.

Visit Ol Pejeta

Originally a cattle ranch, Ol Pejeta has grown into one of Kenya’s best-known private conservancies. It is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including the Big Five, and plays an important role in conservation. The conservancy is home to the largest black rhino sanctuary in East Africa and also provides a refuge for rescued chimpanzees.

In addition to traditional game drives, Ol Pejeta offers a range of activities that focus on conservation and wildlife. Options include:

• Lion tracking
• Night game drives
• Horse riding
• Guided bush runs

With its mix of wildlife, conservation projects and family-friendly activities, Ol Pejeta appeals to travellers of all ages.

From Nanyuki, you will be following the A2 in the direction of Naro Moru. At this small village, you have two options, and in both options you exit in Naro Moru the Nyeri-Nanyuki Road and start following the Naromoru Mweiga Murram Road (in the direction of the B5 road). When you follow this road completely, you have option one.

The second option can give you a sight of rhinos next to the road (without paying fees for it, but be aware you may not stop on this road, otherwise you need to pay for the entrance to the park).  This means you will need to exit the Naromoru Mweiga Murram Road very quickly. It is the second road on the right after you cross the train track. When you follow this road, your navigation will take a new route to the B5 and follow this road in the direction of Nyahururu.

From Nyahururu, we recommend following the B5 to Nakuru. We do not recommend taking the A4 and C83, as it will take you longer.

The road between Sagana and Nanyuki is easy on a paved road. When driving to Sagana, you can have a great view of Mount Kenya on your left side.

Following the A2 north. You will also pass Isiolo, which is the best place to fuel up your car and stock up on supplies before heading to Samburu.

As we recommend staying at Buffalo Springs, we only explain the road to this part of Samburu National Park. At the end of the route, you will head off the A2 and turn left to the Ngare Mara Gate or Chokaa Gate. Both gates are possible, but when you take the Ngare Mara Gate, you can have a (longer) game drive on the route to your accommodation already.

Good to know: add at least 90 minutes to your travel time when visiting Ngare Ndare Forest on your way, and depart early to make the most out of your visit to the forest (highly recommended!). This is without the time of being in Ngare Ndare Forest. For driving to Ngare Ndare Forest, branch off the A2 at Timau. From there, it’s a 15-kilometre detour on a rough road, taking roughly 45 minutes one-way.
