A smooth, well-paved road takes you from Kigali to Gisenyi, on the shores of Lake Kivu.

Beach vibes in the heart of Africa
Rwanda may not have a coastline, but Lake Kivu offers a real beach feel. It’s one of Africa’s Great Lakes, known for its deep, clear waters and stunning views.

Once in Gisenyi, you’ll find plenty of hotels, beach cafés, and options to relax or explore.

You’ll cross into Uganda via the Cyanika border post. Once you’re in Uganda, don’t forget to switch to the left side of the road.

Navigation tip
Google Maps may try to lead you onto small back roads. Avoid this by breaking up your route: first plot Cyanika Border, then Kisoro town, and finally Lake Mutanda or Rushaga.

Scenic drive
From Kisoro, the road to Lake Mutanda winds through the stunning Kigezi Highlands. Expect adventurous dirt tracks, steep terraced hillsides, and panoramic lake views — this is one of the most beautiful and spectacular drives in Uganda.
