In western Rwanda, along the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, lies Lake Kivu, Rwanda’s largest of its many scenic lakes.

Being here feels like you’re in an inland sea – surrounded by volcanic islands and lined with sandy beaches, terraced hills, and fishing villages. By night, the starry sky, warm breeze, and sound of the waves might even make you think you’re in the Caribbean.

• Relax at Rubavu Beach
  Swim in the clear water, lounge on the sand, and explore the lively scene of beach bars, restaurants, and hotels.
• Try kayaking at Minazi Cove
  Rent your gear at Minazi Cove Beach Club and paddle along the shoreline.
• Take a boat cruise to Nyamirundi Island
  Visit the coffee plantation and learn how Rwanda’s famous beans are grown, harvested, and roasted.
• Go fishing
  Lake Kivu is home to around 30 species of fish. It’s a great spot for sport fishing.
• Hike or bike the Congo Nile Trail
  This scenic trail runs 227 km from Rwanda to Congo. The stretch between Gisenyi and Kibuye (91 km) is perfect for a one-day or overnight adventure.

A smooth asphalt road takes you from Lake Kivu to Kigali, the capital of Rwanda (also known as the Land of a Thousand Hills). Enjoy the scenic drive as you make your way into the city.

Approx. 3.5 hours | 112 km

You’ll cross into Uganda at the Cyanika border. Once in Uganda, remember to drive on the left.

From Kisoro, the road to Lake Mutanda winds through the Kigezi Highlands on an adventurous dirt road. The scenery is spectacular, with blue lakes and steep terraced slopes.
