Lake Bunyonyi

Lake Bunyonyi is one of Uganda’s most scenic spots.
It’s the perfect place to slow down, explore the area on foot, or try out your canoeing skills on the lake. With 29 islands scattered across calm blue waters and surrounded by lush green hills, it’s easy to see why travellers fall in love with this place.

To: Lake Mutanda / Rushaga

Approx. 3.5 hours | 80 km

Drive to Kisoro via the well-maintained Kabale–Kisoro highway.

Before you reach Kisoro, ignore Google’s suggestion to branch off at Muko town. Yes, it’s shorter in distance but slower and rougher. First, navigate to Kisoro town. From there, plot your final destination: Lake Mutanda or Rushaga.

The road from Kisoro to Lake Mutanda is an adventurous dirt track through the Kigezi Highlands. Expect stunning views of blue lakes, steep terraced slopes, and the edge of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.

You’ll find petrol stations and ATMs in both Kabale and Kisoro.

To: Lake Mburo

Approx. 4 hours | 195 km

From Lake Bunyonyi, follow the smooth tarmac road towards Lake Mburo.

This route winds through an area known as Little Switzerland, a region of cool air, green hills, and stunning views. Take your time and enjoy the scenery along the way.

To: Rukungiri

Approx. 3 hours | 130 km

The first stretch from Rukungiri isn’t that smooth as the road conditions are not the best. Despite of this, the rest of this route is a scenic drive through rolling hills and tea plantations. This part of the route is on well-maintained tarmac, ensuring a smooth journey.
