Andasibe

Andasibe is one of Madagascar’s most popular parks – and for good reason. It’s the only place where you can spot the Indri Indri, the largest living lemur. You’ll also find brown lemurs, chameleons, colourful frogs, and maybe even a snake or two. The rainforest here is lush, misty, and full of life.

Things to do

  • Night walk in Mitsinjo Reserve – Walk with a guide after sunset to spot mouse lemurs, frogs, and sleepy chameleons. Bring a torch and wear closed shoes.

  • Day walk in Analamazaotra or Mitsinjo Reserve –These neighbouring parks are great for seeing the loud, black-and-white Indri Indri, as well as brown lemurs, snakes, and chameleons.

  • Visit VOIMMA Community Reserve – This small reserve is easy to walk in ánd supports the local community. A good option for a short, meaningful visit.

  • Hike Mantadia National Park – This park is more remote and wild. It’s just 15 km from Andasibe, but the drive takes 1.5 hours on a muddy 4×4 track. You won’t see many other tourists here, but spotting wildlife is harder. Only go if you love hiking and have the time – the trails take over 8 hours to complete.

  • Local experience in the village – Done with your walk? Invite your guide to join you for a drink in the village. Locals are happy with an extra income, and usually very surprised to see tourists there, all smiling and waving shyly. 

To: Antsirabe

Distance & time

300 km | approx. 9 hours

Route

  • Follow the RN2 back toward Antananarivo.
  • Use the Bypass to avoid the city centre traffic.
  • Continue south on the RN7 to Antsirabe.
  • Roads are fully paved, but expect potholes and heavy truck traffic, especially between Tana and Antsirabe — this is Madagascar’s main trade route from the coast to the south.

Food & fuel

  • Take a lunch pack from your lodge in Andasibe for an easier day.
  • Prefer a stop? La Pineta in Ambatolampy is a great option with local dishes and pasta.
  • You’ll also pass several fuel stations with snacks and sandwiches.

To: Ivato

Distance & time

150 km | approx. 5 hours

Route

  • Follow the RN2 back towards Antananarivo, a winding and scenic mountain road.
  • Watch out for potholes, especially around curves.
  • Once near the capital, avoid the city centre, follow Google Maps and stay outside downtown.
  • Your final destination is Ivato, where the international airport is located.

Optional stop

  • Peyrieras Tropical Zoo – A small reptile park with colourful chameleons and geckos. Good for a short break.
