Tsingy du Bemaraha (Bekopaka)

Tsingy du Bemaraha is like nowhere else on earth; a maze of limestone towers and deep canyons. Hiking here is an adventure, with rope bridges, narrow paths and epic views. It’s remote and hot, so plan well and start early.

Things to do

  • Explore the Big Tsingy – Arrange your guide the day before at the park office in Bekopaka, as queues can be long. The entrance is a 1–2 hour drive away. Hikes range from 2 to 6 hours, with ladders, harnesses and suspension bridges. We recommend leaving early to avoid the heat (this is one of Madagascar’s hottest areas!).
  • Hike the Small Tsingy – The Small Tsingy is easier to reach, as the entrance is just outside the village. Most travellers do the 2-hour trail, but longer options (up to 8 hours) are available. Arrange your guide at the park office or, if you hiked the Big Tsingy, use the same one. 
  • Canoe trip on the Tsiribihina River – A relaxing 2-hour ride to visit river caves you can explore on foot. A great add-on after a shorter Small Tsingy hike.
  • Cool off at your lodge – After hiking in the heat, enjoy a swim and a cold drink at your lodge’s pool – you’ll have earned it!

Approx. 200 km | around 10 hours

Route

  • Depart early (around 6 AM) from Bekopaka.
  • You’ll pass two ferries on the way (around €16 per car each).
  • Continue your drive toward Morondava.
  • Around sunset, you’ll pass Baobab Avenue – a great moment for photos.

Tip

  • Try Mad Zebu in Belo for a memorable meal. Its chef is a former 3-star Michelin cook, an unexpected gem in such a remote area. Restaurant Karibo is another solid option.
  • Stop for a drink at the Avenue restaurant near Baobab Avenue and enjoy the view before continuing your final 1.5-hour stretch to Morondava.

Route

  • Depart latest by 8 AM to manage this long travel day.
  • You’ll pass two ferries (approx. €16 per car each).
  • Continue south towards Kirindy.

Tip

  • Stop for lunch in Belo sur Tsiribihina.
    • Recommended: Mad Zebu (former 3-star Michelin chef)
    • Alternative: Restaurant Karibo
  • The ferry rides offer a pleasant break from the bumpy road conditions. Enjoy the slow pace.
