Manja isn’t a destination in itself, but it’s a necessary break on the long, bumpy drive between Andavadoaka and Morondava or Belo sur Mer. Expect a simple overnight stay and not much more.

Things to do
There’s not much to see or do in Manja. Most travellers just spend the night at Hotel Kanto, the only guesthouse in town. It’s basic, but good enough for a quick rest before hitting the road again.
To: Andavadoaka
Distance & time
Approx. 210 km | around 8 hours
Route
- The drive takes around 6 hours, plus extra time for the ferry crossing.
- A bridge is under construction but not yet finished (understandable, considering the remote location)
- Locals operate treetrunk ferries to get you across the river.
Tip
- Ferry costs depend on your negotiating skills, but should be max €60 per car.
- Expect some hassle at the ferry — locals may try to sell items or offer their services.
- It can feel a bit chaotic, but no need to worry: everyone is friendly and helpful.
To: Morondava
Distance & time
Approx. 180 km | around 6 hours
Route
- The final stretch along the remote west coast! Expect more river crossings, and you’ll likely need to engage 4×4 again.
- Navigation can be tricky — you’ll be glad to have a pisteur with you!
To: Belo sur Mer
Distance & time
Approx. 110 km | around 4 hours
Route
- The route crosses plains and quicksand areas. It may look straightforward, but the risk of getting stuck is real.
- Your driver-guide or pisteur is essential today. Let them lead the way!
Tip
- You’re entering one of the most remote and peaceful spots on the coast. Take it slow and enjoy the journey. It’s worth every bump.
